HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation (HELVETAS) is an independent Swiss development organization (Swiss INGO) that actively contributes to improving the living conditions and status of the economically poor and socially disadvantaged in more than 33 developing countries. In its program in Tanzania, HELVETAS has implemented development initiatives in two thematic areas of Skills Development and Education (SDE) and Sustainable and Inclusive Economy (SIE) through several projects, including Hifadhi Nafaka Salama (Save Safe Food), by a period of 3 years (August 2019 - September 2022). ) Post-harvest management initiative funded by Danida Market Development Partnerships (DMDP) in the Rukwa, Katavi and Morogoro regions.
Also known locally as Hifadhi Nafaka Salama, it is one of HELVETAS Tanzania's initiatives to enable smallholder farmers to safely store maize grains, and as a result; It creates employment opportunities for youth and improves food security and incomes among the country's rural farming communities. The project is being implemented in collaboration with two business partners (A to Z Textile Mills Limited and Pee Pee Tanzania Limited), two Regional Administrative Secretaries (RAS; Rukwa and Katavi), and nine Local Government Authorities (LGAs).
The project aims to promote better post-harvest management of maize, including the widespread adoption of tarps and airtight bags for the safe storage of maize. The business objective is to enable two manufacturers of hermetic bags (AtoZ and PPTL) to create sustainable supply systems, thereby generating employment and income throughout the input and distribution value chain. The project will directly contribute to SDG 8.2 to achieve higher levels of economic productivity through diversification, technological improvement, and innovation.
Helvetas Tanzania is now looking for an M&E consultant/trainee to join the Hifadhi Nafaka Salama project team in Rukwa and Katavi districts.
Position: Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Consultant/Intern (This is not a full-time job)
Duration: short term (February - September 2022)
Reporting: Project Manager, Hivadi Navaka Salama, Helvetas Tanzania
Place of destination: Sumbawanga; With frequent local trips for field support and observation in remote villages in Rukwa and Katavi districts
Tasks (duties and responsibilities)
- Prepare data collection tools.
- Draft terms of reference (TOR) for ongoing training events, rapid assessment, and finish line survey, under which the developed results framework is considered
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Conduct timely and daily operational monitoring and project learning, data collection, and report writing
- Support local business partners (farm center dealers, bag suppliers/key farmers in developing digital tools for Post Harvest Technology (PHT) stock management) Support project team in reporting, documentation, and management of knowledge Support the project team in the preparation of technical reports
- Document project-related lessons, best practices, success stories, and case studies.
- Any other function can be assigned by the supervisor.
Competencies / Qualifications
- Minimum Bachelor's degree in Food Science and Technology, Agricultural Community Development, Rural Development, Business Administration, Statistics, or any other related career.
- Postharvest handling experience
- Experience using the KOBO Toolbox (added advantage)
- Experience with digital data collection, evaluation, and monitoring tools (additional advantage)
- Soft skills such as being a good and active team member, with independence and a well-organized way of working
- Ability to improve, innovate and solve problems, and demonstrate digital skills.
- Promotes gender equality and social equality
- Good communication skills (fluent in English)
