Jane Goodall Roots and Shoots (R&S) is an educational movement affiliated with the Jane Goodall Institute in Tanzania that began as a club on February 19, 1991, at Dr. Jane Goodall's home in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania with 12 high school students and four teachers. Today, Roots & Shoots is the Jane Goodall Institute's (JGI) global environmental and humanitarian youth program, with hundreds of thousands of youth participating in more than 100 countries. The Jane Goodall Institute in Tanzania establishes Roots and Shoots Service Clubs in primary, secondary and university schools to help inspire and empower young people to foster respect and empathy for animals and wildlife through action-oriented clubs.

JGI Tanzania is currently seeking to recruit suitably qualified and qualified Tanzanians to fill the following vacancy:

Job Summary:

The Roots and Shoots District Coordinator will administer the Roots and Shoots Scholarship Program in Zanzibar and provide management and supervision to achieve the goal and objectives of the program in a professional manner by ensuring that Roots and Shoots are responsive to the needs of JGI Tanzania, volunteers National and international. , educators, members, government, and other partners. The Coordinator is also expected to demonstrate strong program management skills for the Roots and Shoots model, experience working in a multi-sector team, pilot clubs, conservation education projects, and all other relevant Roots and Shoots projects, and programs in Zanzibar. The position incumbent is expected to raise public awareness, understanding, and confidence in JGI in Tanzania, environmental education, conservation awareness, and education programs, timely reporting, and volunteer capacity building. He works closely with government departments, stakeholders, and partner NGOs to provide management. The following are the basic and specific responsibilities of the job:

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop a standard guide for student selection.
  • Coordination and management of scholarships and career guidance for students in Zanzibar
  • Liaise with universities, colleges, and parents on matters related to scholarships for students.
  • Coordination with the scholarship selection committee.
  • To manage all technical, logistic, and office departments in a district office in Zanzibar
  • Coordination of grant applications, selection, and departments
  • Supervision of community gardens and placement of students in roots and shoots.
  • Coordination of all roots and shoots in the eastern region of Tanzania
  • Create new clubs in schools and areas where needed
  • Represent the National Coordinator at all stakeholder meetings and networks established in the region.
  • Manage and facilitate the Root and Shoot Seedling Production Center in Zanzibar
  • Coordinate and provide data to feed the national root and shoot database.
  • Facilitate and coordinate the planting of mangrove roots, shoots, and trees in Zanzibar and Pemba.
  • Monitor and report on all administrative matters related to membership, certifications, and registrations in the district
  • To coordinate all national and international roots and shoots and JGI visitors in your area
  • To work with the National Coordinator in fundraising for projects and activities for the Roots and Shoots Program in Tanzania
  • Manage, monitor, and ensure security other relevant official duties as directed by your supervisor

Minimum job requirements and qualifications:

  1. At least a bachelor's degree. Ecology or conservation, wildlife management, biology education, and environmental studies.
  2. Strong background in professional teaching: earth sciences or science subjects, or strong leadership in strategy, projects, and office management skills.
  3.  Practical understanding of hands-on training, conservation education, tree planting, and community engagement.
  4.  Ability to work under pressure, deadlines, and little supervision.
  5.  Previous experience in managing education for conservation, environmental education, outreach, and missions.
  6.  Ability to effectively manage a team of professional program managers, volunteers, and trainees,
  7. Desirable knowledge and experience in the field of conservation and sustainable management of natural resources,
  8. Computer skills and ability to use data analysis software, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
  9. Experience working under high pressure, with multiple skills and dynamic ability to communicate effectively with various agencies, government departments, UN agencies, and partners.
