Project background

PlayMatters (2020-2025) is an educational initiative funded by a $100 million grant from the LEGO Foundation. The program re-imagines the childhoods of more than 800,000 children from refugee and host communities in Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Uganda, children whose education and social development have been affected by displacement and trauma. Building on the incredible resilience of children and the growing evidence base supporting learning through play methodologies, PlayMatters cultivates holistic learning for children ages 3-12. PlayMatters is run by the International Rescue Committee and includes Plan International, War Child Holland, Innovations for Poverty Action, and the Behavioral Insights Team in association with the LEGO Foundation.

Situation Summary

IRC is looking for a Human-Centered Design Supervisor to join our content and experiential teams in Tanzania. The human-centered design supervisor will use comprehensive qualitative context research to understand the opportunities and barriers to game-based learning; As well as work in collaboration with education experts to design and test models of initial intervention in refugees and host populations in Tanzania. The human-centered design supervisor will work with the PlayMatters content teams to interpret the results of early intervention testing, behavioral research, and other formative research to collaboratively identify solutions for integrating game-based learning into schools, which our content teams can lead by integrating into intervention drafts. For interventions that may need testing to fit the context, the Human-Centered Design Supervisor will work with our teams to lead the testing process, including the development of test plans (test action plan, learning questions, interview guides, etc.) and in collaboration with our experienced user content testing teams. The content will be designed to support behavior change for teachers, caregivers, and community members to embed learning through play into the lives of children ages 3-12 where they live and learn.

Main Responsibilities

The Human-Centered Design Supervisor will be an integral part of our team and will work collaboratively with the PlayMatters content development teams.

Product design: the human-centered designer will help adapt the content to the team. The human-centered designer will work with the content development teams to test/contextualize the preliminary community interventions (as needed) and identify areas for improvement in the preliminary interventions, based on the results of small test trials. scaling, prototyping, and contextual testing. This may include digital/analog user streams, mockups, service design boards, performer media design, short video or audio clips, and other assets required for each program.

Workshop Facilitation and Design: The designer will work closely with the PlayMatters content development and testing teams to co-lead co-design workshops with key stakeholders (remote and/or in-person). They will gather ideas from interviews and design workshops with the team to determine actions for the next content iteration.

Prototyping and Testing: The designer is responsible for connecting the dots between user research and evidence and guiding team experts to create testable prototypes. Examples of prototypes include low-resolution prints/illustrations, clickable mockups, message samples, high-resolution models forThe designer will participate in the creation and implementation of practical guides and test plans for the use of the final assets. They will work with the Monitoring and Evaluation team to formulate the interview questions that need to be answered during the pilot phase. They will work with the team to co-manage the testing process and tailor the assets and final post-pilot evidence based on research feedback from the M&E/project team.


Job requirements

  • 2 years of product design experience
  • Qualitative Research/Human-Centered Design Research Skills 3-5 years
  • Graphic design experience
  • Portfolio illustrating graphic design projects, design research, and product design.
  • Preferred experience creating educational content, educational services, or educational software.
  • Preferred experience working with educated adults, young children, refugees, and vulnerable populations.

Educational and expertise

  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Education, Anthropology, Sociology, Cultural Anthropology or related degree (Master's preferred).
  • Ability to synthesize lessons learned from previous tests to identify the specific intervention elements required, document and share progress, lessons learned, challenges, obstacles, and other information with the country team, regional team, and design lead.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with content teams to improve and build next interventions based on test results already obtained.
  • Ability to lead and manage teams to test content and ensure content is relevant to all users in all PlayMatters contexts.
  • Work with the PlayMatters graphic designer and content teams to ensure content is designed to meet user needs.
  • Experience in collecting qualitative data.
  • Experience leading design research and prototyping with end-users.
  • Experience in creating user experiences, interactions, and user flow.
  • Able to create a client-ready visual design from scratch.
  • You can create a customer-ready visual design within an existing system or brand, and you can extend an existing visual system and produce a print-ready job.
  • You can make effective decisions for user experience elements such as buttons, layouts, visual design, and pathfinding for both space and digital experiences.
  • Exceptional visual design skills to present ideas and concepts to non-designers.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills, as well as a general ability to be clear and concise in all communications.
  • Strong organization and time management skills; Proven ability to prioritize and deliver on time.
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a dynamic cross-functional global team structure.

Work environment
