background
APT Action on Poverty is a UK-based international development organization (NGO) that focuses on supporting African employment and projects, tackling issues with social impacts such as child labor and gender inclusion. We have been working in local communities in Tanzania on livelihoods and group development since 2013.
There are increasing funding opportunities for joint programs with larger private sector companies/cooperatives and NGOs to grow businesses and provide social and economic benefits to supply chain actors, in particular large numbers of smallholder farmers. low income While APT doesn't have the funds to invest ourselves, we do have the skills, connections, and ability to:
Opportunities to receive grants as and when available from development funders.
Support business development and value chains, particularly among small farmers and supply chains.
Goal
The purpose of the consultancy is to define the business:
that have connections to a large number of small farmers/low-income individuals as part of their supply chain. While we are interested in Arusha and Moshi in the Kilimanjaro region, these are not exclusive. It is understood that the registered office may not depend on these areas.

Choice of business and required information:
The appropriate action will be:
A product that adds value to crops or agricultural products, such as beans, peanuts, sesame seeds, coffee, cotton, cashews, tobacco, tea, sisal, and food/beverage processing (this is not an exclusive list).
Where production/labor is provided by many people, including farmers/small cooperatives, artisanal miners, rather than large-scale mining/monocultures.
A legally registered and operated company, preferably Tanzanian-owned, with links to (preferably) Moshi and Arusha.
One is open to further engagement with APT to discuss a partnership.
An individual wishing to consider a joint investment of £50,000 - £250,000 as a 50% contribution to apply jointly with APT for a business-type grant.
We will request a brief profile for each business that includes the following information:
I. Business name, address and contact information
II. Clear confirmation and status of 1 to 5 previous selection criteria
III. The role of companies in the value chain
IV. Describe the current difficulties facing the company.
V. Relationship with small producers and their estimated numbers
The consultant will collect further information (see the process below) on three or more companies that fit the selection criteria, to include the following topics, depending on what the company wishes to disclose at this early stage:
The ownership structure of the business, with details of subsidiaries/parent companies and an overview of existing agreements and relationships with other businesses
The number and data of the officially designated employees. Description of other employees/informal providers of goods or services
A description (business perception) of your current and potential market
business expansion plans; Focusing on those whose income exceeds £100,000 a year
Supply chain challenges or potential areas where value can be added; For example, increasing or developing the productive capacity of small farmers or improving the impact on local communities.
Comments on the potential for improvements in gender equality or women's empowerment (eg, women's participation in the value chain or directly in business).
Processing:
Scoping Exercise: The consultant prepares a list of appropriate actions.
The counselor discusses the results with the APT and then together they decide on a shortlist.
The consultant collects more detailed information about the selected business through conversations with senior employees (minimum of 3 companies).
The counselor submits an oral and written report to the APT two weeks after the completion of the work visits. Written reports must include profiles of the specific business.
Experience and qualifications
This notice is for citizens of Tanzania. The consultant will have a good understanding of the agricultural sector in Tanzania and regional and local economic trends. Understanding the NGO/CBO sector is a plus. The consultant must have English speaking
Timeline
Consultation period: 8 days divided between the signing of the contract and the delivery of the report. The consultancy will be based in Tanzania for a competitive fee based on experience.
The initial report must be submitted within one month from the signing of the contract before March 14, 2022.
