Situation Summary
IFAKARA is looking for a qualified person to work as a Communications Assistant who will join the Institute through an internship program. The ideal candidate is a communications professional who will be tasked with assisting the head of communications in managing the official Ifakara website and social media platforms by creating, posting, and following up on comments, among other things; Summarize, synthesizing, and presenting scientific work and findings as appropriate; Support in the management of communications in events organized by IFACARA units, departments, and projects.
Duties and responsibilities
- Provide coverage of Ifakara events on the official Ifakara website and social media channels as required.
- Compose website and social media messages for different types of audiences as required by Ifakara and international standards.
- Take/obtain photos and videos to illustrate website messages, social media, publications and other academic works as required by Ifakara and international standards.
- Design/present messages in an attractive way as required by Ifakara and international standards.
- Simplify publications and other scholarly works into understandable summaries for non-scientific audiences as required by Ifakara and international standards.
- Design/present messages, publications and other academic works of the digital platform in an attractive way, as required by Ifakara and international standards.
- Compilation of monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual publication reports and other academic works as required by Ifakara and international standards.
- Supervise the recording (in video mode) of publications and other academic works as required by Ifakara and international standards and support their dissemination/exchange in Ifakara's internal and external channels.
- Provide support in the planning, coordination and execution of official Ifakara events as required.
- Liaise with the media, including liaising with them and inviting them to IFACARA events as needed.
- Prepare information kits (with all necessary materials such as press releases, fact sheets, photos, videos/video links) for official Ifakara events.
- Brief the media at events, including ensuring their logistics and meeting all their needs, such as scheduling interviews with IFACARA researchers as needed.
- Monitor media after events and compile reports (including clips and links to event coverage) monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, and annually as required by Ifakara standards.
- Perform other communications support duties as specified and provided by the supervisor.
Qualifications and experience
A bachelor's degree in mass communication or a related field is preferred.
Graduates with proven experience and ability may also be considered.
The idea of doing some aspect of the work would be a plus.
Skills and competencies
Ability to work independently and under minimal supervision.
Excellent communication skills: Proficiency in writing, in particular, is a must and will be specially checked.
The ability to interact with compatible apps to beautify and simplify digital communications, such as Canva and MailChimp.
Compensation
The Ifakara Health Institute provides transportation and meal allowances only to the selected candidate as per the institute's policy.
